Universal wireless electric fence tester, 1–8 kV, pocket-knife design

The universal wireless electric fence tester is a compact pocket-knife-style device designed for quickly checking voltage levels in an electric fence system. The detected voltage range is indicated by an LED, making it practical for fast field inspections.

Electric fence systems operate with high-voltage pulses, so they should be checked using a device intended for this type of installation. The tester has a measuring range of 1–8 kV.

It can be used to check electric fence operation and help identify problems such as broken polywire or wire and voltage losses caused by excessive vegetation contact. It can also be used when checking the grounding system.

Recommended use

The tester can be used to check voltage levels at different points along the fence and for quickly diagnosing common problems in an electric fence installation.

  • Checking electric fence operation

  • Identifying sections with reduced voltage

  • Locating broken polywire or wire

  • Detecting voltage losses caused by vegetation

  • Checking the grounding system

In many electric fence applications, approximately 6–8 kV indicates a high voltage level in the fence. The voltage actually required may vary depending on the animal species, fence length and configuration, vegetation and overall system condition.

Important

Do not check an electric fence by directly touching the conductor, and do not use a conventional multimeter unless it is designed for the high-voltage pulses generated by electric fence systems.

This tester indicates the voltage level using an LED and should not be confused with a digital electric fence tester that displays an exact numerical voltage value.
